Summer / Fall 2004 NEWSLETTER

November 5, 2004

Dear friends!! Jean Pavillard

I am very pleased to start this newsletter with news of our successful climb of Cho Oyu 8,201 meters in Tibet on September 26th, 2004. Monica, Tom and I, met in Katmandu on August 24th. We traveled to Lhasa, Schigatze, Tingri and then base camp at 4,900 meters. After 5 days acclimatization we moved to advanced base camp at 5,665m.

Moving slowly to acclimatize well, we climbed several times to camp 1 at 6,400m. and camp 2 at 7,100m. On Sept 22, we set off for the final push. We spent 2 nights at camp 1. On the 24, we climbed to camp 2. And on Sept 25, to camp 3 at 7,500m.. The weather was perfect, warm with no wind. The forecast was good and the Tibetain calendar was favorable for that day. On Sept 26th at 2:30 am we set off for the summit. By 7: 30 am we had reached the summit of Cho Oyu 8,201meters with great view of Everest, Lothse, Nuptse and many more peaks. This trip proved to be a preparation for Everest.

LEYSIN: ROCK CLIMBING, VIA FERRATA, KIDS CAMP
The last week of July 2004 I enjoyed some time working with my brother and the "Ecole D'Alpinisme of Leysin" taking people along the via Ferrata and teaching kids climbing, setting up a Tyrolienne traverse and laughing a lot with fifteen 6 to 10 years old climbers.

Leysin Switzerland offers so much for it's guests: great rock climbing in the tour D'AI or near by Miroir d'Argintine (14 pitches of great slab climbing), Via Ferrata for great airy sensations, a kids climbing camp for the fun of adventure and discovery.

HIKING THE HAUTE ROUTE FROM CHAMONIX TO ZERMATT:
JULY 12-20, 2004
Trekking across the Alps is just plain exceptional: all day hikes with magnificent views, great evening in lodges, Inns or mountain huts and plenty of time to feel the unique atmosphere of the Alps. I meet the Wolf family from Fort Myers, Florida in the climbing capital of Chamonix. After an evening shopping, we set off across the Alps. Hiking over high passes with incredible views of the Alps high peaks and glaciers and down high green pastures along beautiful cascading streams. We crossed several glaciers and watched the Ibex. At night we enjoyed some incredible Inns, lodges and hotels. My favorite was the hotel Bella Tola in St Luc built in 1893. At that time the English tourist were accessing the Hotel via a mule trail from Sierre via Vissoie. It was as if the magic of the "olden days: was still in the air. To finished the tour in style, we enjoyed the via ferrata of the Gorner gorge above Zermatt, rappelling, sliding along a Tyrolienne traverse then swinging on a rope across mountain water. Join us next summer ! schedule departure July 2005.

MULTI SPORTS ADVENTURE TOUR: June 29 - July 11.
Briancon, France - Ardeche, France - Pyrenees, Spain - Sierra De Guara, Spain

This was a fast paced exploration and customized adventure that was tons of fun shared in great company. This tour was designed for 3 family, the Kalozdi's, Levy's, and the Sanderford's. It included, kayaking, canyoneering, rock climbing, mountaineering, hiking, a via ferrata and sight seeing. We meet in the medieval town of Briancon after the team visited Normandy, La Loire and Paris. Right away, we change the pace, rock climbing and experiencing a Via Ferrata (the first one built in France). We then transfer to Ardeche where we kayak the Ardeche river, mountain biked and visited one of the largest cave in the world. Another transfer took us to the Spanish Pyrennees climbing in Pico de Aneto. To finshed with a bang, we visited the Sierra de Guara for some rock climbing, via ferrata and canyoneering. We explore some incredible regions. This tour will remain engrave in our memory forever.
